Bywater Real Estate & Info

The Bywater neighborhood is one of the most sought after areas for artists and performers in New Orleans.  Once French Quarter prices skyrocketed, surrounding areas like Marigny and Bywater became the new go to location for many creative types.  This lead to the renovation and restoration of many of the historic homes in area, only adding to the Bywater’s charm.  Many of the homes for sale in the Bywater are some of the most unique in the city, thanks to the influence of these artists.  This creative influence is felt all over the Bywater.  A stroll through this neighborhood will reveal art pieces littered throughout its streets and live music and dive bars at any turn.

The Bywater is home to Dr. Bob’s Art Gallery, a very popular self-taught artist in New Orleans, most famous for his “Be Nice or Leave” pieces that can be found in businesses and homes throughout the city.
The St. Claude Art’s District hosts a night the second Saturday of every month in which art lovers can visit the many galleries and shops in the area and get a taste of the amazing talent housed in the Bywater. Unlike the polished galleries of Downtown and the French Quarter, these spaces are very reflective of the more edgy and upcoming environment the Bywater offers.
One can also find a plethora of handmade local offerings at Bon Castor, 3207 Burgundy.  This shop carries everything from jewelry and art work to furniture.  It’s a treasure trove of one of a kind pieces only found in New Orleans.

Once you have stocked your home with amazing art, it is time to take in the incredible music the Bywater has to offer.
Bacchanal, 600 Poland Avenue, is a wine and cheese shop, offering seasonal eats and live music outside on the back patio.  Unlike the live music on famous Frenchmen Street, Bacchanal gives up and coming musicians a chance to stray from the jazz classics that tourist’s downtown demand and develop their own sound in front of a live audience.  The space’s romantic feel and off the beaten path location make Bacchanal one of the Bywater’s best kept secrets.
Vaughan’s Lounge, 4229 Dauphine Street, is also a hotspot for live music.  This hole in the wall has been featured on HBO’s Treme many times and used to be the place to see Kermit Ruffins every Thursday night.  Vaughan’s is a great little joint to grab a bite and a cold drink and enjoy a truly New Orleans atmosphere.

The little known musicians that can be seen in the Bywater add a gritty authentic feel to the sounds pouring into its streets. Homes for sale in the Bywater are often snatched up by up and comers to the music and art scene and become the places they cultivate diehard fans.
