Named after New Orleans Refining Company, Norco in St. Charles Parish is flanked by the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain, just a half-hour west of New Orleans. Originally part of the Côte des Allemands or German Coast when German pioneers settled in the 18th century, Norco has a famous history. Charles Deslondes, the first free person of color, led a rebellion that is commemorated here each year. Today, Norco is home to several major refineries and has been the focus of media attention as a “company town” with both its positive and negative aspects. With a population of approximately 4,000, Norco is a close-knit community whose residents liken it to Mayberry.
Shopping and Dining
In addition to shopping and dining in New Orleans, Norco residents have several area shopping centers and malls, including Dillard’s: The Esplanade, Esplanade Mall, Lakeside Shopping Center, and Clearview Mall. Norco’s Lovecchio’s Deli is known for its crab cakes and Friday Special. Louisiana residents are proud of their Creole and Cajun cuisine, as evidenced by nearby favorites Mario’s Cypress Café and Pam & Dale’s.
Parks and Recreation
With Lakes Pontchartrain and Maurepas to the north and Lakes Cataouatche and Salvador to the South, Norco is surrounded by natural beauty and outdoor activities that belie its industrial history. Maurepas Swamp Wildlife Management Area offers bird watching, boating, and sightseeing. Manchac Wildlife Management Area and Salvador Wildlife Management Area offer fishing, boating, bird watching, and other recreational activities. Jean LaFitte Historical Park and Reserve has educational programs that provide a window into the state’s vital geographical and cultural traditions. Bethune Park is located within Norco itself.
