Just 20 minutes from New Orleans, about 30 minutes from the world famous French Quarter, 10 minutes from the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, and an hour from Baton Rouge, Destrehan is located in St. Charles Parish on the East bank of the Mississippi River. Destrehan has the highest income per capita not only in St. Charles Parish but also in the whole tri parish area also known as the River Region (which consists of St. Charles Parish, St. John The Baptist Parish and St. James Parish). Destrehan recently was named as the most desirable suburb in the state of Louisiana due to its great location, economy and award winning schools. This community of 12,000 has the caring and friendly attitude of a small town but with big city amenities. Destrehan epitomizes Louisiana’s rich historical and cultural tradition, with great food and architectural gems, and in close proximity to the area’s diverse natural habitats.

Shopping and Dining

Destrehan’s small size has little relation to its shopping and dining. There are several area shopping centers and malls that meet residents’ needs, including Cypress Village Shopping Center, Dillard’s: The Esplanade, Lakeside Shopping Center, Esplanade Mall, and Clearview Mall. As for cuisine, Louisiana’s mix of African, French, Spanish, German ancestry makes it one of the best places in the country to dine. Destrehan has its local favorites, including Mario’s Cypress Café, Pam & Dale’s, Rotolo’s Pizza, and Café Ormond. Another favorite is The Seafood Pot which offers some if Louisiana's finest seafood. With New Orleans close by, residents can take advantage of the city’s great shopping and award-winning restaurants.

Parks and Recreation

Built in 1787, Destrehan Plantation is the oldest surviving plantation home in south Louisiana. The house is set on four acres of wooded land, and is built with a second-floor gallery and Doric columns. St. Charles Parish’s bayous and canals, and Lakes Del Allemands, Salvador, and Pontchartrain offer great fishing. Bark at the Bridge Park is an annual event sponsored by St. Charles Humane Society and offers pet adoptions, vaccinations, and microchipping. Within an hour’s drive are Bogue Chitto State Park and Tickfaw State Park, offering visitors a chance to explore cypress/tupelo swamps and hardwood forests; canoe, kayak, and ride horses; partake in educational programs and activities.

Salvador Wildlife Management Area is on the northwest shore of Lake Salvador in St. Chares Parish and supports a large alligator population. It is also a nesting ground for bald eagles. Manchac Wildlife Management Area is located in upper St. John the Baptist Parish, and includes a vital duck pond called the Prairie near Lake Pontchartrain. Recreational activities include boating, fishing, and bird watching. Local boaters frequent Lake Maurepas for weekend getaways and annual Lake Bashes on Memorial and Labor Day. Jean LaFitte Historical Park and Reserve has several park sites that offer music, nature, and other educational activities and programs. For indoor recreation, Destrehan’s family-owned Cardio Club 24-Fitness Center is the largest gym in St. Charles Parish, and includes classes, state-of-the-art equipment, and 24-hour member access. Cypress Lakes Country Club at Ormond offers members golf, tennis, swimming, and dining at Cypress Bar and Grille.

Living

CNN Money Magazine has named Destrehan as one of the Best Places to Live, according to factors such as income, quality of life, and leisure activity. Destrehan’s median house value is approximately $260,000 and real estate is generally quite affordable. Homes for sale include a range of architectural styles, from French Creole to Craftsman to Antebellum Plantation. In Destrehan, desirable neighborhoods include Acadia Lane, Ormond Boulevard, Ormond Meadows, and Dunleith Drive, where large, plantation-style brick construction and mature landscaping are evident. Real estate in the Harding Street and Meadows Drive areas have ample-size homes for sale beginning under $100,000. The River Road that follows the Mississippi includes restored antebellum properties.

Schools, Health, Transportation

Destrehan is serviced by St. Charles Parish Public Schools and includes some of the top schools in the state. Ethel Schoeffner Elementary School, Harry M. Hurst Middle School, and Destrehan High School have received excellent GreatSchools ratings. Award-winning Ochsner Clinic, St. Charles Parish Hospital, River Parishes Hospital, and Tulane-Lakeside Hospital all serve the area. Destrehan is just ten minutes from Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, and its major corridors are Interstate 310 and Route 48/River Rd. River Parishes Transit Authority has public transportation.
